Born on the battlefields of France, Gary Concord lost his parents during World War One and vowed "to wipe out war." In an underground bunker, Concord was on the verge of creating a chemical so powerful that he would use "its very frightfulness to force man to peace." In early July of 1950, a catastrophic world war struck the United States and bombing raids struck Concord's lab, knocking scores of chemicals to the floor. The volatile mixture created a foam that threatened to engulf the trapped Concord. Moments before he sank into the mixture, Gary at last hit upon and recorded his "formula for peace." Gary awakened to find the chemicals draining from his bunker thanks to an earthquake. To his astonishment, the year was now 2174! With mankind still racked by war, Concord (now enhanced with greater height and muscle due to the foam) returned to his formula for peace. Using derivatives of the foam, bombs struck war-mongering cities and placed their inhabitants in suspended animation. Hailed as a man of peace, Concord married a woman named Leanadra and they had a son, Gary II, in 2214. Concord died at the age of 100 (or 324) in 2239. Gary II continued his father's good works as Ultra-Man (2)

Gary Concord Jr. was born in 2214, the son of Gary Concord Sr. and Leandra. When his father died from old age in 2239, Gary Jr., who had inherited his father's size and strength, was chosen to succeed him as High Moderator. The hero career of the new Ultra-Man was a successful one, during which he battled the warlord Tor, among other menaces. Just like his father, Ultra-Man Jr. was put into suspended animation for centuries, and did not resurface until the 100th century.

With Cap, Junior and Mary, you had the basis for what would be known as the Marvel Family, but there was still more. When a con man discovered Mary’s diary and tried to pass himself off as their long-lost “Uncle Marvel” so as to cash in on their popularity, he soon gave in to the better angels of his nature and was quickly accepted into the Marvel Family. Uncle Marvel didn’t have any powers or anything, but when the others would say their magic words and transform in a clap of lightning, he’d quickly unzip his outer garments, revealing his own homemade Marvel uniform underneath. Good-natured kids that they were, they never let on that they knew he was bogus.

The Quality Comics version of Uncle Sam was originally a white-haired soldier (named Sam, of course), killed in the Revolutionary War. As he lay dying, he envisioned American freedom so strongly, his soul, instead of moving on, merged with the Spirit of Liberty, and remained on Earth to fight for that cause. As history sped by, Uncle Sam manifest himself repeatedly, lending his strength whenever his country needed him. Ezra Smith, a patriotic American, tries to oppose a group of fascists calling themselves the “Purple Shirts.” For his troubles he gets shot dead. His son Buddy, heart-broken, runs away into the nearby desert. Moments later he hears “Yankee Doodle” being whistled, and then meets Uncle Sam, the embodiment of American patriotism. He has super-strength, grows in size relative to his anger, can perform Hulk-leaps, can’t be photographed, and has limited precognition.

The Unknown was a man about whom (appropriately enough) virtually nothing was or is known. His name, nationality, and motivation all remain a mystery. The Unknown had incredible strength and a certain degree of invulnerability. He battled the Axis powers in Europe helping any decent man who needed him, until disappearing from the scene in 1944. (One thing I do know, is that in a previous issue (#21) he started as a non-active narrator of Mystery tales.)

The mysterious Unknown Soldier, nameless though self-described as “the spirit of the boys who died to see that our nation (The USA) shall live forever,” shows up wherever things look worst for democracy. He fights for the good guys, naturally. He has super-strength, and flight, and carries a “nitro gun” whose bullets are explosive.
