The Moth was a short-lived Batman knock-off. Jim Mooney (artist) got his first comic book art assignment in 1940, from the young company just in their second year of publishing comic books. He was assigned to do the art for the first story on a character called The Moth. The writer suggested to him that this character had much in common with a character from another publisher called Batman. Taking a look at The Batman, Jim 's character was too similar and DC Comics took legal action causing Fox to cease publishing the character. The Moth appeared in only four stories in issues #9-13 of an anthology book entitled "Mystery Men".... all in 1940. He was called 'Moth Man' on the cover.

In 1040 Prince James, the 20-year-old heir to the English throne, is assassinated by Scots rebels. James' spirit is not allowed to go on to its final resting place. Then the spirit trapped in the castle, lingers for centuries. In 1940 the British take his castle apart and ship it to the United States. The ship transporting the castle is sunk by a U-boat, and this frees James' spirit. James keeps going to the U.S. and takes on the identity of Mr. Justice to stop others from being killed the way he was. As a ghost he gets his power from the "spectral planes;" he can fly, move underwater as easily through air, and can emit blasts which destroy bodies and souls. He can also move as a spirit or in a more solid form, which is vulnerable to fire.

Doc Sterne got 'banged up a bit' in one of his adventures; and so decided to make himself a costume. So in the last panel of Triumph Comics #31 the design was shown with the caption "DON'T MISS!! The first thrilling FULL-COLOUR adventures of Mister Monster as he meets... The Terror of Trezma... in Unusual Comics. They'll be coming soon!" Unusual Comics never appeared, but in May 1947 The "Terror of Trezma" did appear in Super Duper Comics #3, which was the first and last issue, and only Golden Age appearance of Mr. Monster. (and in the interim he gained a skull logo from his original design)
