Fred, Pedro and Slim were members of the French Foreign Legion who were killed while attempting to avoid hurting innocents; they had been ordered to bomb innocent villagers but were dropping the bombs in the desert when their own plane exploded. (It had been sabotaged) Rather than going on to their final reward, they were stuck on this plane as ghosts, and decided to use their new status to fight the Germans and after the war ordinary criminals. As ghosts they could fly, walk through walls, and act invisibly. They could also materialize, but were vulnerable in that form.

Rex Fury was a federal marshal in the old west. He wore a white outfit, covered with phosphorus, with a huge, flowing cape that was phosphorescent on one side and black on the other he used the black side to cover parts of his body, so he could appear to be a floating head or pair of hands. He wielded a black lariat and a black bullwhip, so he could appear to grab things at a distance. Even his twin six-guns and his horse, Spectre, glowed in the dark. From the bad guy's point of view, Rex Fury was bad enough but this guy wasn't even human!

A switchboard operator at the Daily Planet who daydreams continually of a love affair with Superman and who becomes temporarily endowed with an extraordinary array of mind-boggling mental powers including telepathy, telekinesis, and extrasensory perception when "a strange experiment" in the laboratory of Professor Weirton gives her "powers that the human race won't acquire for hundreds of eons," thereby transforming her into the virtual super-powered equal of Superman. Knowing that her powers will vanish in twenty-four hours, and determined to use them to fulfill her long-held dream of marriage to Superman, Susan reads Superman's mind to learn his secret identity and, by threatening to reveal it to the world, finally persuades the Man of Steel that he has no choice but to marry her. As the time for the wedding ceremony as well as the twenty-four-hour deadline draws near, however, Superman tricks Susan into miscalculating exactly how long her powers will last, with the result that Susan collapses in a faint in the midst of the ceremony, bereft of her special mental powers as well as her knowledge of Superman's identity (c) Supermanica
