Country of origin USA
Tony Quinn was a wealthy young bachelor and D.A. upset with crime and the number of criminals who escaped the law's punishment. When crooks threw acid in his face, blinding him and leaving him with a number of scars around his eyes, Quinn resolved to get his revenge. He embarked on a training program to develop his other senses; his hearing and sense of touch became superhuman. He trained until he was in top-notch physical condition. And then, by means of a secret operation, Quinn got the eyes of another man and regained his sight. More than that, he got the ability to see in the dark. He did not make this news public, choosing to inform only a few close friends. Instead, he put on a black cape, black hood, black shoes, black mask and cowl, and became the Black Bat, a crimefighter universally feared in the underworld. Black Book Detective Magazine was a fairly average pulp until it introduced the character of The Black Bat crimefighter in the July 1939 issue. He featured in about 60% of the magazine's issues and was directly responsible for the magazine surviving into the early 1950s, long after most detective pulps.

Black Boy is the son of Fantax, Horace Neighbour, Jr.. His father, drawn older, makes occasional guest appearances. Black Boy rides a souped-up red motorbike and fights crime. Black Boy was an attempt by Mouchotte to resurrect Fantax, killed by French censorship. By removing the mask, and focusing on more "mundane" stories -- many plots involve crime rings, spies and saboteurs -- Chott thought that he would escape the wrath of the censors. After the character was launched it was entrusted to the talented Remy Bordelet (who had already collaborated on Fantax) and to Francis Peguet. Actor Lino Ventura was a clear inspiration for Black Boy's likeness.
