After the Martians had seen an atomic bomb detonated on our planet, Lars of Mars is sent to Earth to stop evil from taking over the Earth, and fear that Earth could easily become a threat to Universal peace. Earth doesn't know that Martians exist. When Lars arrives on Earth he sees a woman being attacked by two robots, and flies down and attacks them. He finds the robots are not real, just acting out a role, and he's mistaken for a wanna-be actor auditioning for a part in a new TV series about, coincidently a man from Mars. Lars realises that this would be a great undercover alibi, and so he gets the job, and plays the hero for real! (two issues only)

Dennis Burton, a young Assistant D.A. from a long line of law enforcement officers, saw that it had become too difficult to convict gangsters, so he decided to take the law into his own hands, put on a glowing laughing mask, and with two .45s fight crime in his own way. After this appearance he changed his name to the Purple Mask. Apart from his athleticism, he has no powers, and is definitely a killer vigilante, even shooting a bound and helpless gangster.

Leopard Girl was a jungle queen who wore a full-body leopard skin, complete with a leopard-head on her head, ala Hercules with his lion skin. In her civilian identity she was mild-mannered "Gwen," an assistant to the noted scientist and philosopher Dr. Hans Kreitzer, who is in the jungle doing "research." But when evil threatens, Gwen slips away, lets her blonde hair down, and changes into Leopard Girl. Dr. Kreitzer and his assistant Peter are relatively intrepid, always curious and trying to investigate the curiosities of the jungle, but they inevitably get themselves in trouble and need Leopard Girl to rescue them.

The bald-headed Luthor has been Superman's main foe for most of the superhero's existence and has unveiled countless plots to destroy him and take over the world. Originally Luthor was a mad scientist but has since been rewritten as a Machiavellian industrialist and white-collar criminal. Although Superman clearly considers Luthor one of the world's greatest scientists, despite the fact that he is a criminal, the Man of Steel has also described Luthor as a "madman" and a "fiend" and numbered him among the world's worst villains.

Naturally, he decides to fight crime with it, although he is forced to maintain a cowardly front as Nelson Drew, which earns him the criticism of his girlfriend Annabel. When he takes the Lamesis formula he has super strength.
