He gains enough power to take on and defeat all the Japanese he comes up against. He is assisted by 'Ching Foo', a Chinese friend, and by his pet komodo 'dragon Komodo'. The Red Dragon, by holding his hands together and saying "Po-She-Lo," gains magic powers, including flight, matter transformation, and illusion projection.

Born in South America of Yankee parents, the Red Gaucho grows to widespread fame by his dashing, smashing methods of battling crime and oppression. He generally does the Zorro thing, laughing as he fights, dressing like a gaucho and using a whip and a sword. Some of his early opponents are communists rather than fascists.

Left with no alternatives, he dove into a catch basin for the chemicals and swam to freedom, surviving because of a special breathing apparatus built into the helmet. The toxins in the vat permanently and grotesquely disfigured him, however, turning his hair green, his skin white and his lips red. Upon discovering this, he went insane and became the Joker.
