Spirit Malcolm works from a hidden base to watch the world and find crime. When he does, he attacks it with the help of his assistant Ray Williams. He has no superpowers as such, but uses the Futurscope, which "projects on a screen any action that is going on in any part of the earth" and the Mistodine ray, which sends Malcolm's spirit to the location on which the Futurscope is trained, and the Rayodine gun, which is a simple blaster. Exposed to the rays, he can become incorporeal at will. In this invisible state he can fly and is still able to handle solid matter.

200 years ago 'Black Douglas' an excellent swordsman and fighter, while fighting some pirates, is caught and set adrift to die at sea. He comes apon a mysterious island, and drinks the peculiar tasting water, and notices that hot springs are sending boiling water, mud and a strange black gas to the suface. He decides to have a sleep. The gas then sends 'Black' into a two century sleep. It was the water he drank that kept him alive, for it happened to be the spring of eternal life. On trying to reach the mainland, he bumps into Nazi's in a submarine, and asks for a lift to 'merrie old England'. The Captain of the sub gladly lets Black travel to England to prove to him the Germans are a superior race, and is intent on blowing up the Royal Navy. 'Black puts a stop to this by breathing out the black gas he has breathed in for 200 years, knocking out the Nazi guards. The pilot of a Spitfire aircraft is then shot in a dog fight overhead and lands his plane. Black goes to help the pilot, who passes out. Black then jumps into the Spitfire turns every gadget and gets it off the ground, flys for a few minutes until he gets the hang of it. (Isn't this great?) and then flies into the thick of the dog-fight. Defeating the German airforce almost single-handly until he runs out of fuel. He lands in German soil and is fighting for his life when he picks up a stray burning torch, which ignites his black gas breath, turning him into a walking flame-thower. The Germans call him 'Spitfire'...
