Son of the British Cousul in Calcutta, Count Fredrick Rank. During a journey back to England, the ship carrying Count Rankand his family sinks; the only survivors are Mrs Rank and her son Jim. Washed ashore on an unknown land, they build a shelter, but the mother is then killed by a panther, which carries away Jim; the panther in turn is attacked by a gorilla, who after the battle picks up Jim and takes him away to bring up as his own. 16 years later Akim is now king of the jungle. Akim lives in the jungle with Rita, and a young ward whom he protects like his own son.

So he puts his skill at archery to good use, donning a costume and catching criminals as the Spider. He is helped by his valet and chauffeur Chuck. He has no superpowers but is very accurate with his arrows, has a spider sense that forces victims to drop their guns, uses various trick arrows, and has the Black Widow, an extremely fast car.
