In 1920 John Aman, a child orphan, was chosen, by the Tibetan Council of Seven to be trained to "perfection," both mental and physical. When he's 25 he's ready to fight crime in the outside world. He returns to America and does just that. His kid side-kick is Tommy the Amazing Kid. He is also helped by 'Zona Handerson', ace girl crime investigator. Amazing Man's powers include super strength, invulnerability, and the ability to make himself disappear in a cloud of green vapour. It is for that last power that he is also known as the 'Green Mist.' Amazing Man's arch-enemy is The Great Question, an evil telepath. Amazing Man has the distinction of being the first 'super-hero' to debut in his own title.

Thomas Halloway is a private eye, who fights crime. In his first story it did not disclose how he became The Angel. A non-human origin was sometimes hinted at in early stories by having him cast a shadow with large wings. He didn't maintain a secret identity at first, but was addressed as 'Angel' even when wearing a regular suit rather than his stylised blue tights with red cape and yellow wings on his chest. His only super power was an occasionally-exercised ability to fly, and many perfectly human superheroes have that. Anyway, it was attributed to the aerodynamic qualities of the cape. Halloway's mother had died in childbirth and his father, a prison warden, had raised him in the prison, isolated from outside human contact except for the experts the warden brought in to teach the boy everything there was to know.

Kaanga is a white boy who is orphaned when his explorer family and other members of their expedition are slaughtered in the Congo. The boy, whose real name is never revealed, runs away and is adopted by a local tribe of ape-men. They raise him to be one of their own, and he grows up to be one of them, forgetting all he knew of the white man s ways and talk. Sure enough, of course, as an adult he gets involved with some white people who re-teach him English. He falls in love with one of them, Ann Mason, and the pair marry and live, Tarzan-and-Jane-like, in the jungle, fighting for good against everything from bad animals to dinosaurs to witch doctors to Germans.
