Richard Henry Benson, a globe trotting adventurer who decided to settle down and raise a family. In his first adventure, Benson's plans for a peaceful life are shattered when his wife and young daughter are killed by a criminal conspiracy. The shock of this loss has a bizarre effect on Benson. His hair and the skin of his face turn white, and the flesh of his face became malleable, like clay. He armed himself with two unique weapons, a knife he christened Ike, and a pistol he christened Mike; the former was strapped to his left calf, the latter to his right. The Avenger's code was a simple one. He refused, personally, to take the lives of even the lowest crooks. However, he would manoeuvre them into positions where, by certain moves springing from their own hate or greed, they were apt to destroy themselves.

Scientist Roger Wright became the Avenger to avenge the death of his brother who was tortured and killed by Russian agents. His costume was made by his assistant Claire Farrow after Roger saw her buy a Ghost Rider mask for her nephew. This was also a first for product placement, as the mask was actually available from Magazine Enterprises mail order service; As Ghost Rider was a masked character appearing in other Magazine Enterprises titles. The Avenger had a Vertical Take-Off Jet and a dissolver gun.
