Professor Jordan is a chemistry teacher at a New York City high school. After school one day he is showing off one of his experiments to Tim Mulrooney, his prize student, who unfortunately bounced a rubber band off the back of Jordan's head and so merited after school detention. Jordan has discovered what he calls the "wonder fluid," which has "more power than a dozen men." Unfortunately, Jordan, who is a bit clumsy, drops the vial. It breaks and floods the room with strange fumes. Both Jordan and Tim inhale vast quantities of the fumes. Jordan passes out, but Tim, thinking quickly, opens a window and the fumes escape. Once the pair recover they discover that they've gained the strength of a dozen men. Naturally they decide to fight crime and the Axis with their new powers. They put on costumes, Jordan calling himself "Captain Wonder" and Tim calling himself "Tim."

The old Yogi invoked the three Gods of Old. A strange pulsating light fills the room, and the three ghoulish figures appear. The old Yogi speaks! "Oh, Gods, may I present a young Canadian who has lived with me for the past twenty years! His parents were killed by a criminal! And now he wishes to return to Canada to exterminate all such malignant doers! Will you aid him in his task?" Suddenly, a dazzling flash of lightning transforms the young Canadian. Standing there clad in a colourful costume he now has the three gods gifts. Into the night soars Captain Wonder! The gods gave Captain Wonder "the strength of a hundred men, great wisdom, and speed, the power to fly like a bird and swim like a fish."

Little is known about the early years of Richard Dare, but at the outbreak of World War II in Europe, he aided the British Royal Air Force in an experimental airplane, and was based at Chatham Dockyard, Kent, England. After the US's involvement in the conflict, he became attached to the OSS and worked for them under the code name "Aviator". During his time in England, he became friends with the villain known as The Shade, who aided him on several missions. ....After the war, he continued to work for the US Intelligence. Dare was a ruthless fighter, well trained in the arts of espionage. He was proficient in many weapons, but his most amazing one was his "aeroplane", composed of a nearly indestructible transparent plastic, when airborne, he was nearly invisible.

Captain Zenith's origin is unknown, but he was a dedicated superhero. In his only recorded case, he came to the aid of a man who had just been mugged, but couldn't find the car the victim described the criminals driving off in. Returning to ask the victim more questions, Captain Zenith saw that he was already being interviewed by the police. When the hero saw the next day's papers, his suspicions were aroused, as he saw that the victim. Mason Fleger, had his stolen property heavily insured. He confirmed his theory by listening into Fleger's conversation with his accomplice, perched outside the window of the man's flat. Confronting the two crooks, Captain Zenith easily captured them. He has superhuman speed and is able to climb the side of buildings like a fly.

In her first appearance she was simply called The Cat, her real name was unknown and she didn t even have a costume. She was just a beautiful, sophisticated, dressed-to-kill jewel thief introduced to give the series a little sex appeal, according to co-creator Bob Kane. Then in Batman No. 10 (1942), she finally got a civilian name: Marguerite Tone, a bored socialite who stole for kicks. In subsequent appearances, she was also beautician Elva Barr, magazine publisher Madame Moderne and a maid named Belinda. Which didn t last. In Batman No 62 (1950), a bump on the head revealed she was Selina Kyle, a stewardess who had lost her memory! She immediately reformed, but later returned to her wicked ways out of injured pride.
