The Merrywether family is travelling through the jungles of Burma when bandits kill the mother, father, and sister. Young David is the only survivor. He is found and raised by a tiger, and gradually gains all the powers of the "cat family." He returns to the United States, only to be appalled by the crime and evil he finds. He decides to fight it, both as a private eye (later a soldier) in his civilian identity and as the costumed Catman. He is assisted by his 12-year-old ward, Katie Conn, who puts on a costume and fights as Kitten. Catman has cat-like powers; he can see in the dark, "leap many times his length," and can climb "anything." He also has nine lives; he is watched over by a "guardian angel in the form of a tigress," who can and does bring Catman back to life when he is murdered.

The name Selina Kyle is first used ( Batman No. 62, 1950), during a period which also introduces the cat-a-combs headquarters, the Catarang, the cat-o-nine-tails, and the Kitty Car. Working for Speed Airlines as a stewardess, Selina is the sole survivor of a crash, thrown clear when a door tore open. Stumbling from the wreckage, she has almost total amnesia, with only a "vague recollection .of a pet shop my father owned---cats!" Becoming a thief know as the Cat, she soon adopts a flamboyant costume and an equally flamboyant moniker: Catwoman! Her only rule is never to kill or allow killing in any of her crimes. Catwoman's one weakness is her love for her nemesis Batman.

A portrait frowns...a man gasps a last message...and Rance Raleigh casts aside his modest identity to become the Cavalier! The Cavalier has no special powers other than the Duke De Chantrey s portrait which warns him of evil afoot. He is, however, a fine fighter and athlete in the swashbuckling tradition. One day Jake Miles is run down by an automobile and brought into Rance Raleigh's curio shop where he tries unsuccessfully to tell Rance something and then dies. But Rance's assistant Rocky sees the ancestral portrait of the Duc De Chantrey frown and Rance knows its time to go into action as the Cavalier.

While savage Balu natives in the African Jungle are slaughtering her parents, an eagle carries little Carol away. Soaring above the un-scalable mountain range called the barriers of the Moon, the young girl is deposited in the Dawn Lands; a lost valley where life goes on as at the dawn of time. There Carol is raised by Kattu the wolf. As years passed the name of Carol was forgotten and she became Cave Girl, who ran with the wolves. She learned how to use a bow, spear and knife. Bill Waring suffers the tragedy of having his father murdered by the mob. The Challenger, a law student, decides to avenge his father, and travels around the world, learning the skills to avenge his father, not just weapon-related but in areas like chemistry, "nerve control," and flying a plane. He returns to the States, avenges his father's death, and then fights crime. He has no superpowers, but is extremely skilled with weapons and in hand-to-hand combat; he challenges criminals and then beats them with their own weapons.

Chandu gets x-Ray vision from drinking water from a pond contaminated with Kryptonite. He's captured by some big game hunters who take him to the US, he stolen by some crooks who need Chandu's X-ray vision to rob banks. Chandu escapes and Superboy comes to the rescue. Superboy finds he's weakened by the X-ray vision.
