Mandrake's powers were acquired through years of schooling in Tibet, where he began his studies during childhood. One of his teachers, Luciphor, later decided to use his powers for evil, adopted the name "Cobra", and appeared in the strip as a recurring villain. Mandrake is an incredible hypnotist, able to instantly put someone under with a glance. He generally uses this to make people see things that are unreal - e.g. create magical illusions. In the earliest stories Mandrake was a genuine magician, with real supernatural powers, but as time passed he was returned to just being a skilled human employing trickery.

"Eons ago," in South America, a very advanced civilization flourished. They created an android named "Manowar" and programmed him to become active when mankind needed him. They then buried him inside of a mountain. Manowar wakes up when the Germans bomb his mountainside. He defeats the Germans, makes his way North, and takes on the identity of Dan Sanders. He enlists in the FBI and fights crime and more Germans. Later in his run he is assisted by Red Seal. He has x-ray vision, invulnerability, and can fire rays of "knife-like electrons" which can destroy but also form solid objects.

Mantor the Magician is an uninspired character with little to recommend him. He is a fez-wearing Mandrake the Magician lift, quite similar to Monako but lacking even the little spark of creativity which Monako had. It's no surprise that Mantor, who was never given an origin or background, lasted only one issue.
