After DC had won it's court case against Fawcett's 'Captain Marvel.', Fawcett cancelled the title which was being reprinted by Leonard Miller. So to get around copyright problems a few changes had to be made....Micky Moran, (Billy Batson) boy reporter for the Daily Bugle. (instead of station Whiz) Shazam the Mystic becomes Guntag Bargholt and the magic word "Shazam" becomes "Kimota" (Atomic spelled backwards). Once uttered, the boy becomes, not 'Captain Marvel', but 'Marvelman', not the world's mightiest Mortal, but 'The Mightiest Man in the Universe'. See it all fits in rather nicely.

A group of aliens observe the Earth from their home in the Fifth Dimension. They decide that humans would make good slaves, and so they create a vaguely human-looking android to help them enslave homo sapiens. They name this android 'Marvex.' But when Marvex discovers their plans he goes rogue and kills the aliens. He then wrecks the lab, causing a strange explosion which sends him to Earth. Once here he decides to help humanity by becoming a superhero. Marvex is made of "fabri-steel," a "strange metal" which renders him invulnerable and bullet-proof. Marvex has super-strength, can run at super speeds, and can perform Hulk-like leaps. He has an advanced mechanical brain can send radio messages via his mind.

The origin is sort of a cross betwen Dr. Mid-Nite's and Two-Face's. Crusading DA John Colby has the goods on a mob boss, but when the trial comes to court, a mob henchmen flings acid on the incriminating paper documents, splashing Colby in the face in the process, blinding him.Later, a mysterious woman arranges Colby to undergo an experitmental operation. Colby's sight is restored...with the added bonus of being able to see perfectly in the dark. As the story progresses, he picks up three operatives: Silk, a reformed criminal; Butch, a muscle-bound bruiser; and Carol, the woman who helped him regain his sight. (c) Copper 2008To confuse things, Nedor originally intended to call the Mask the Owl. That accounts for the fact that in the early stories the Mask has a beak and the hero leaves behind a calling card that has an owl's head on it.
