In August 1940 Hal Carey decides to go on an extended vacation to explore the jungles of South America. This might have ended normally enough but for his being chased into a cavern by a native tribe. Trapped Dr. Carey and his guide, Nero, begin exploring for another exit, only to be catapulted many centuries backwards into the past. When they emerge into what they think is their world they head for civilization only to discover that things are not as they left them. Dr. Carey, renamed Dr. Voodoo by his Viking opponents, and Nero have to find the Golden Flask for only it is reputed to have the power to return them to their own time.

In an airplane factory, the saboteurs have done their job well. The plant is up in flames, and the workers lie dead; the Shield is too late to prevent this disaster. A boy who came to meet his father at the factory stands silently, watching in disbelief as his life changes forever. As the Shield pursues the saboteurs, the young boy Dusty follows after him, seeking his own justice for these cruel deeds. The Shield wades into the mass-murderers, while Dusty corrals two would-be escapees and, with the Shield's help, brings them to justice. With the fight over, Dusty wonders what will become of him. Since Dusty is now an orphan, the Shield offers to take the young lad in as his partner in the cause of truth, justice, and freedom. Dusty has no super powers, but his quick wits and athletic training are a fine substitute.
